We are not experts on the home school option, so please be sure to check with an expert
before relying on this information. However, some of us have recently investigated home
schooling as an option for our high school children. Below is what we found.
If a high school student chooses not to finish high school at a public or private school, there are three basic options that we have learned about to obtain what is called a High School Equivalency Diploma. If you have further information, or if you find that any of the information below is inaccurate, we would appreciate it if you would contact us.
Option 1: A student can take the nine hour NYS test called TASC, formerly known as the GED. The student will generally sign up for a preparation program to prepare them for the test. The obtains the High School Equivalency diploma through New York State.
Option 2: A student can enroll in home schooling through the school district in which they reside. The program is monitored by the school district. There are two basic ways that this can be facilitated.
1.) The parent can facilitate all of the instruction and assessment, and submit documentation to the school district. The student obtains the high school equivalency diploma through the local school district.
2.) The parent can hire a home schooling facilitator to help with some instruction and assessment, and the parent submits documentation to the school district. The student obtains the high school equivalency diploma through the local school district.

Option 3: A student can enroll in a program through a participating community college in NYS, and complete the required courses at home. The student obtains the High School Equivalency diploma through the college. The credits that the student receives can count toward the first year of college in many cases.
